Complete Healthy Weight Calculator Guide, Formulas & Definitions

1. What Is Healthy Body Weight?

Healthy weight is the body weight range associated with the lowest risk of weight-related health problems including heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and certain cancers. This calculator uses the World Health Organization (WHO) standard Body Mass Index (BMI) classification system to determine healthy weight range for a given height.

2. Core Calculation Formula

Healthy weight range is derived by rearranging the standard BMI formula to solve for weight at the upper and lower boundaries of the normal BMI range (18.5 – 24.9).

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)²
Healthy Weight = BMI × Height²

Lower healthy weight = 18.5 × height²
Upper healthy weight = 24.9 × height²

3. WHO Standard BMI Classification System

Category BMI Range (kg/m²) General Health Risk Level
Severely Underweight < 16.0 Very high health risk, nutritional deficiency concerns
Underweight 16.0 – 18.4 Elevated risk of immune system weakness
Normal / Healthy Weight 18.5 – 24.9 Lowest risk of weight-related diseases
Overweight 25.0 – 29.9 Moderately elevated metabolic disease risk
Obese Class I 30.0 – 34.9 High risk of type 2 diabetes and hypertension
Obese Class II 35.0 – 39.9 Very high risk of multiple comorbidities
Obese Class III (Morbid) ≥ 40.0 Extremely high health risk, significantly reduced life expectancy

8. Important Limitations

BMI is a population-level screening tool and does not directly measure body fat or body composition. Athletes with high muscle mass may fall in the overweight category despite low body fat and excellent health. Older adults, pregnant women, children and people with very large or small bone structure should interpret BMI results with additional context.
