1. What Is Running Pace?

Pace describes the amount of time required to complete one unit of running distance, most commonly minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer. It is the primary metric runners use to measure effort, plan race strategy, and track fitness improvements. Unlike speed (distance per hour), pace frames performance as time per unit distance, which is more intuitive for endurance athletes.

Total Seconds = Hours × 3600 + Minutes × 60 + Seconds
Pace (sec/unit) = Total Seconds ÷ Total Distance (units)
Speed (km/h) = 3600 ÷ Pace(sec/km)
Speed (mph) = 3600 ÷ Pace(sec/mile)

Time and pace fields accept simplified shorthand formatting without leading zeros:
• 10:05 = 10 minutes 5 seconds (pace input)
• 5:3 = 00:05:03 (short time input)
• 50:25 = 00:50:25 (50 minutes 25 seconds)
• 1:50:25 = 1 hour 50 minutes 25 seconds

All outputs are flat linear mathematical projections that do not account for fatigue, hills, wind, temperature, terrain, or pacing slowdown over long endurance efforts. Actual race finish times will almost always deviate slightly from these static calculated values due to real-world running variables.
